ai1y collects nothing about you. It has no accounts, no analytics and no ads, and its makers never receive what you read, ask or record.
ai1y comes from an independent project and is free to use. Its format and reader are open source, and its tools for making books are free to run yourself. It runs in your web browser or on your own computer. Any data it keeps stays on your device. The only time anything leaves your device is when you use a feature that calls an online service you chose, and each of those is described below.
The website and the reader at ai1y.co
The site and the reader are static pages hosted on GitHub Pages. They use no cookies, analytics, trackers or third-party scripts, and the fonts are served by ai1y itself.
- What the reader keeps: your settings, reading place, downloaded books and practice results are saved in your browser’s own storage. They never leave your device, and clearing the site’s data in your browser removes them.
- Practice reading aloud: the recording is checked in your browser. The results appear only on the grown-up’s sheet and are never sent anywhere.
- Hosting: GitHub, which serves the pages, may keep standard web server logs (such as IP addresses) under GitHub’s privacy statement. ai1y does not see or use those logs.
- Questions: the hosted reader has no server behind it, so it never sends your questions anywhere.
Running ai1y on your computer
When you run ai1y yourself (the reader with its ask service, or the creator studio), it works on your computer. Some features call online services using keys you add.
- Your keys are kept in your computer’s own credential store (the macOS Keychain, Windows Credential Manager or the Secret Service on Linux). After you save a key, ai1y never shows it, logs it or sends it anywhere except the service it belongs to.
- What each service receives:
| Feature | Service | What is sent |
|---|---|---|
| Questions about a book | Anthropic (Claude) | Your question and the passages of the book it needs |
| Asking out loud | Deepgram | Your spoken question, and the answer to be read aloud |
| Drafting a cast, picture summaries, chapter icons | Anthropic (Claude) | Text and pictures from the book, never anything about you |
| Putting a book on a Yoto card | Yoto | The book’s audio, its chapter icons, title and description |
Each service handles what it receives under its own privacy policy. ai1y sends nothing else to them, and nothing at all to its makers.
Yoto cards
ai1y works with Yoto. It is an independent tool, not made or endorsed by Yoto.
- Signing in: you sign in on Yoto’s own page, in your browser. ai1y never sees your Yoto password.
- What ai1y can do: it asks only to create and update your Make Your Own playlists and their icons. It cannot see your players, your family or your other cards.
- What stays on your computer: the Yoto sign-in token is kept in your credential store. The ID of each playlist ai1y made is kept beside that book’s tracks, so uploading the book again updates the same playlist.
- What goes to Yoto: the book’s audio, its chapter icons, title and description, placed in your own Yoto library.
- Signing out:
ai1y-yoto sign-outremoves the token from your computer. Playlists stay in your Yoto account until you delete them in the Yoto app.
Put only books you have the right to use on a card, such as free public-domain books or books you own, for your own family’s players.
Children, changes and contact
- Children: ai1y is made for families, and children use it with a grown-up. It collects no personal information from anyone, including children under 13. Practice results stay on the device, where only the grown-up’s sheet shows them.
- Changes: if this policy changes, the new version will be posted on this page with its date. Each change is also recorded in the project’s public history on GitHub.
- Contact: for questions about privacy, write to support@ai1y.co.
ai1y is in beta
ai1y is in beta, and this policy will change as it grows. Everything described above stays free: the format and reader for everyone, and the tools for making books to use and run yourself. We plan to add a hosted service for professional creators, which will be paid, with free accounts for schools, nonprofits and families who need it. That service will need accounts, so before it launches this page will say what it collects and why, and it will carry a new date.
