Pattern hunt
Pick a spelling pattern. Every word in the book with it is underlined, with its letters in bold. Your reader finds each one and taps it to hear it, then reads the page with Read to me.
Read to a grown-up
- Choose a word for them to start on.
- Tap Start as they begin reading aloud. Tap any word they miss; tap it again to undo.
- Tap Stop when they finish, then tap the last word they read.
A miss is a word they skip, read as a different word, or can't read after about three seconds.
Not a miss: repeating a word, fixing a word themselves, or saying it with their own accent, dialect or speech (a stutter, or a sound they can't make yet).
Why these measures?
Words correct per minute and accuracy are the oral reading fluency check schools use. In the early grades they track overall reading, including understanding, and they rise week to week as reading improves, so they show whether practice is working. Reading aloud to a grown-up who helps with missed words builds fluency too.
They don't show why reading is hard, and they don't test understanding. Use them with care, alongside accuracy, for a reader who is anxious or reads slowly for other reasons, who stutters, who is learning English, or who is deaf or hard of hearing; school norms may not fit them.
The studies behind this are listed in ai1y's practice spec, docs/specs/sounds-and-practice.md, under "Evidence and who each mode is for".
